Last decade has witnessed aggressive scientific pursuit to restore function in the permanently damaged spinal cord. The team is exploring the possibilities of regenerating the injured spinal cord through transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells from the bone marrow and specialised cells from the nose known as the olfactory ensheathing cells, in animal models of spinal cord injury. Trans-differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into neural cells and its physiological characterisation is being studied. Techniques using enzymes like chondroitinase and channel blockers are also being investigated.
