Please see below for more details about each of the strains.
C57BL/10ScSn-Dmdmdx/JThe mdx mutation of Dmd is recessive and heterozygous females are visually indistinguishable from wild-type mice. Females homozygous and males hemizygous for the Dmdmdx allele retain a normal lifespan and can survive up to two years. Like human patients who suffer from one of the most common neuromuscular diseases, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), the Dmdmdx mutants do not express dystrophin and therefore have been routinely used as an animal model of the disease even though the resultant myopathology is much less severe compared to the human disease course.
C57BL/10ScSnJ
C57BL/10ScSn is a substrain of C57BL, which is one of the most widely used inbred strains. This, is used as a control strain for C57BL/10ScSn-Dmdmdx/J.
BALB/cJ
BALB/cJ is a commonly used inbred mice strain.
C57BL/6J
C57BL/6 is the most widely used inbred strain. It is commonly used as a general purpose strain and background strain for the generation of congenics carrying both spontaneous and induced mutations. Although this strain is refractory to many tumors, it is a permissive background for maximal expression of most mutations. C57BL/6J mice are used in a wide variety of research areas including cardiovascular biology, developmental biology, diabetes and obesity, genetics, immunology, neurobiology, and sensorineural research. C57BL/6J mice are also commonly used in the production of transgenic mice.
NU/J
The two main defects of mice homozygous for the nude spontaneous mutation (Foxn1nu, formerly Hfh11nu) are abnormal hair growth and defective development of the thymic epithelium. Homozygous nude mice lack T cells and suffer from a lack of cell-mediated immunity.
FVB.Cg-Tg (CAG-EGFP) B5Nagy/J
This transgenic strain expresses an Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein (Clontech) driven by chicken beta-actin promoter and CMV intermediate early enhancer. Mice, and cells derived from them, are distinguished from wild type on the basis of fluorescence. The transgene is expressed in all nucleated embryonic tissues. Cells and tissues with increased hemoglobin content exhibit reduced fluorescence as development progresses. In newborn and adult mice, the entire organ system expresses EGFP. Though widespread, expression levels vary between different organs. This strain can be used as a source of fluorescently marked cells or tissues
B6;129S4-F8tm1Kaz/J
Mice that are homozygous for the targeted, X chromosome-linked mutant allele are viable and fertile. Homozygous females and carrier males have less than 1% of normal factor VIII activity and exhibit prolonged clotting times. These mice recapitulate key features of hemophilia A and provide an excellent model for use in exploring gene therapy strategies
Sprague dawley CD (SD)
General multipurpose model, safety and efficacy testing, aging, nutrition, diet-induced
Obesity, oncology.
